The new AppleTV+ animated movie Luck was released on August 5 and features an all-star cast including Simon Pegg, Whoopi Goldberg and Jane Fonda.

The new AppleTV+ animated movie Luck was released on August 5. This fantasy is about Sam, an 18-year-old orphan without much luck, who follows Bob the talking cat into the Land of Luck, where good and bad luck is created.

Many familiar voices are in the film such as Simon Pegg, Jane Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg. The cast members have been featured onscreen in such well-known films and series between them. Some of the cast have also been featured voice actors in other animated projects, notably John Ratzenberger, one of Pixar's recurring stars.

Young stage actress Eva Noblezada plays the movie's heroine Sam Greenfield, marking her first voice role. Sam is the unluckiest person in the world but a trip to the Land of Luck could provide a chance to turn that around.

Noblezada is currently starring as Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway and plays Ruth in the movie Easter Sunday. Yet she is most known on screen for her portrayal of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon: 25th Anniversary. Kim is obviously a much more serious role than Sam Greenfield for Noblezada. Yet one thing that Noblezada's two roles do have in common is that they are both very unlucky orphans.

Comedic actor Simon Pegg provides the voice of Bob the Scottish black cat who travels with Sam in the Land of Luck. Initially not interested in helping Sam, the two soon develop a strong friendship as the movie progresses.

For many, Pegg is most known for playing Shaun in Shaun of the Dead, the first of Edgar Wright's “Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy” that also includes Hot Fuzz and The World's End. In this "zom-rom-com", Pegg's lazy slacker Shaun must survive the zombie apocalypse in London. Pegg's Shaun balances the comedic antics with the more dramatic scenes such as his relationship with his stepfather Philip.

Hollywood star Jane Fonda voices Babe the Dragon, the CEO of Good Luck in Luck.  She has played many memorable roles over the years but her most well-known recent role is Grace in Grace and Frankie.

There is surprisingly more in common with both of these roles than at first glance. Both Grace Hanson and Babe the Dragon are owners of their own companies and have harsh sides. Babe banishes all bad luck and Grace can be cruel to her friend Frankie, such as chastising her for not having children.

Another renowned actor to appear in the movie is Whoopie Goldberg, who plays The Captain, the no-nonsene Land of Luck head of security. Goldberg is no stranger to comedic roles, with one of her most popular roles being Deloris in Sister Act, Sister Act 2, and the upcoming Sister Act 3.

Yet, Goldberg has also delivedered outstanding performances in more serious roles. Notable examples are  Celie Johnson in the Academy-award nominated film The Color Purple and Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Goldberg's more dramatic roles in The Color Purple and Ghost clearly show her range as an actor.

Jeff the unicorn who manages the luck distributing machine in Luck is played by Flula Borg, whose most well-known role is Pieter Krämer, one of the leaders of the rival acapella group Das Sound Machine in Pitch Perfect 2.

Borg excels as the arrogant leader of an acapella group. His experience singing in his AutoTunes series on his long-running YouTube channel made him very equipped for the singing aspect of the role. Borg's larger-than-life personality also makes him a good fit for voicing animated characters, such as DJ Herzogenaurach in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and Dickory in Trolls 2: World Tour, and of course, Jeff.

Lil Rey Howery, a standup-up comedian, plays Sam's cheerful arts and crafts store boss Marvin. He has had experience in voice acting before, such as playing Alex in The Angry Birds Movie 2, but it's little question that Howery's most known role is Rod in the Jordan Peele-directed horror film Get Out.

Howery's character of Rod in Get Out might be considered the audience's point-of-view character. He's the closest friend that Chris has in the film, and does everything he can to rescue him when Chris's phone suspiciously cuts out. Howery's Rod is unique in that while many horror films get rid of comedic characters towards the end, he saves the day instead.

Colin O'Donoghue plays Gerry, a leprechaun who works with Bob in Luck. The actor is no stranger to fantasy realms, as O'Donoghue is most known for playing Captain Killian 'Hook' Jones in the fantasy series Once Upon A Time.

O'Donoghue's Captain Hook is a very complex character. He is a rogueish but honorable take on the famous pirate who eventually falls in love with Emma, the show's main protagonist. O'Donoghue showed a lot of talent in portraying two very different versions of Captain Hook, including one from an alternate timeline (Wish Realm).

In Luck, John Ratzenberger plays Rootie, an anthropomorphic root who is the mayor of Bad Luck. For a number of animation fans, Ratzenberger is instantly recognizable for voicing a prolific amount of Pixar characters including Hamm in the Toy Story franchise, the Underminer in The Incredibles, and Mack in Cars.

Another famous Ratzenberger role is the eccentric mailman Cliff Clavin in the long-running Emmy-winning sitcom Cheers. Ratzenberger's portrayal of Cliff Clavin over the many seasons of Cheers allowed him to use his acting skills to show the many sides of Cliff. Rootie, like Cliff, can be found at a bar, but rather than being a customer, he is a bartender.

Moe Irvin plays Phil the Pig Foreman in Luck. He has had an extensive career in movies and television but he is most known for playing Tyler Christian in the medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

Tyler Christian has appeared in many episodes, and is one of the most likable nurses at the hospital. With a good relationship with a number of the surgeons and always on hand to help interns, Irvin's Tyler will always be a welcome addition to the show.

Adelynn Spoon provides the voice Hazel, an orphan and a something of a little sister to Sam. She played Freya in Tell Me Your Secrets, Cordelia 'Corky' Matney in Sweet Magnolias, and Emma Abar in the mini-series Watchmen.

Spoon's Emma and Hazel both have plot points related to adoption. Emma is the adopted child of Cal Abar and Angela Abar and Hazel are trying to get adopted. Emma's past of her parents being murdered is revealed, while Hazel's backstory is never revealed.
