Just completing the Spartan Race is a feat. Brock Hathaway, 25, of Claverack, Columbia County, finished the challenging obstacle course race.

Hathaway has cerebral palsy and is legally blind. The condition makes his muscles very tight.

Together – and with the help of others – he completed the 5k and 20 obstacle race in Bethel, New York – in 3 hours, 10 minutes and 41 seconds. His aide and friend, Allison Ryan, was by his side the entire time.

In order to do this, Hathaway needed to step up his daily workout. That meant a lot of stretching to work on those tight muscles.

All of this was done at Stride Adaptive Sports in West Sand Lake, Rensselaer County – where Hathaway worked out for free.

He worked on walking using their zero-gravity treadmill, which takes off up to 80% of his body weight.

However, on race day, it truly was a team effort. Complete strangers stepped in to help Hathaway become a finisher.
