Nautilus will pay $7 million to resolve class action allegations that it inflated horsepower ratings of Bowflex treadmills.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased certain Bowflex, Nautilus, or Schwinn treadmills between July 7, 2016, and Nov. 16, 2021.

Nautilus is a fitness company that touts itself as “the founder of the modern commercial gym.” The company sells treadmills, bikes, and other gym equipment under Nautilus, Bowflex, and Schwinn brands.

In 2020, a treadmill purchaser filed a class action lawsuit against Nautilus claiming the company inflated the horsepower ratings of its treadmills in order to raise prices and deceive consumers. The plaintiff notes horsepower is one of the most important specs consumers look at when purchasing treadmills.

In order to reach the horsepower advertised by Nautilus, treadmill owners would allegedly have to provide two to three times the amount of power typically provided in residential electric systems. In reality, the Nautilus treadmills ran at far lower horsepowers, the class action lawsuit contends.

According to the plaintiff, he and other consumers were deceived by the horsepower ratings and tricked into paying more for Nautilus treadmills than they would have if they knew the truth.

Nautilus hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these claims with a $7 million settlement.

Of the $7 million total settlement, $4.25 million will be used to form a payment fund.

Under the terms of the settlement, Class Members can recover an equal share of this settlement fund. Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed — the more claims received, the lower payments will be.

The settlement also provides a free one year subscription to JRNY, Nautilus’ workout app, which provides trainer-led videos.

In addition to providing benefits to Class Members, Nautilus will change the way it advertises horsepower on its Bowflex treadmills. The company will stop using continuous horsepower rating and will include a disclaimer with any horsepower advertisements in order to better inform customers of the treadmills’ capabilities.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 1, 2022.

The final approval hearing in the treadmill lawsuit settlement is scheduled for June 21, 2022.

In order to benefit from the settlement, Class Members must submit a valid claim form online or by mail by May 2, 2022.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased certain Bowflex, Nautilus, or Schwinn treadmills between July 7, 2016, and Nov. 16, 2021.

A receipt for the treadmill purchased, or other similar type of documentation evidencing the purchase of the treadmill.
